{"id":3513250,"date":"2025-05-29T10:38:17","date_gmt":"2025-05-29T10:38:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.resilience.org\/?p=3513250"},"modified":"2025-06-06T22:23:46","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T22:23:46","slug":"study-reveals-up-to-11-million-tons-of-plastic-polluting-ocean-floors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.resilience.org\/stories\/2025-05-29\/study-reveals-up-to-11-million-tons-of-plastic-polluting-ocean-floors\/","title":{"rendered":"Study Reveals Up to 11 Million Tons of Plastic Polluting Ocean Floors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The amount of plastic waste littering the Earth&#8217;s ocean floors could be up to 100 times the quantity floating on the surface, according to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0967063724000360?dgcid=coauthor#preview-section-snippets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> published this week.<\/p><p>Researchers at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO)\u2014an Australian government agency\u2014and the University of Toronto in Canada found that up to 11 million tons of plastic are polluting the planet&#8217;s ocean floors, including microplastics and larger objects like fishing nets, cups, and bags.<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;We know that millions of tons of plastic waste enter our oceans every year but what we didn&#8217;t know is how much of this pollution ends up on our ocean floor,&#8221; CSIRO senior research scientist and study co-author Denise Hardesty said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2024-04-ocean-floor-reservoir-plastic-pollution.html#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. &#8220;We discovered that the ocean floor has become a resting place, or reservoir, for most plastic pollution, with between 3 to 11 million tons of plastic estimated to be sinking to the ocean floor.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote twitter-tweet is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;Every minute, a garbage truck&#8217;s worth of plastic enters the ocean.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>A few profit and the rest of us pay for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PlasticWaste?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PlasticWaste<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PlasticPollution?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PlasticPollution<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NovelEntities?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NovelEntities<\/a> planetary boundary trashed<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HqYE0AzOLm\">https:\/\/t.co\/HqYE0AzOLm<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>\u2014 Natalie Bennett (@natalieben) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/natalieben\/status\/1776505369067442453?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 6, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;[T]he ocean surface is a temporary resting place of plastic so it is expected that if we can stop plastic entering our oceans, the amount would be reduced.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;However, our research found that plastic will continue to end up in the deep ocean,&#8221; Zhu stated. &#8220;These findings help to fill a longstanding knowledge gap on the behavior of plastic in the marine environment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cUnderstanding the driving forces behind the transport and accumulation of plastic in the deep ocean will help to inform source reduction and environmental remediation efforts, thereby reducing the risks that plastic pollution may pose to marine life,&#8221; she added.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>The study is part of CSIRO&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/research.csiro.au\/ending-plastic-waste\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ending Plastic Waste<\/a> program, whose goal is &#8220;an 80% reduction in plastic waste entering the Australian environment by 2030.&#8221;<\/p><p>Humans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd-ilibrary.org\/environment\/global-plastics-outlook_de747aef-en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">produce<\/a> approximately 440 million tons of plastics annually, or roughly the combined weight of every person on the planet. Plastic pollution harms not only the environment and ecosystems, but also human health and economies.<\/p><p>Plastic use is expected to double by 2040.
