{"id":3513248,"date":"2025-05-29T11:01:24","date_gmt":"2025-05-29T11:01:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.resilience.org\/?p=3513248"},"modified":"2025-06-06T22:22:02","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T22:22:02","slug":"a-new-study-finds-that-microplastics-are-increasingly-present-in-human-brains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.resilience.org\/stories\/2025-05-29\/a-new-study-finds-that-microplastics-are-increasingly-present-in-human-brains\/","title":{"rendered":"A new study finds that microplastics are increasingly present in human brains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new study has found a dramatic increase in levels of microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) in human brains in recent years.<\/p><p>MNPs have previously been detected in human&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0048969724001384\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">lungs, intestine<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0304389424018454\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">bone marrow<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0160412020322297\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">placenta<\/a>.<\/p><p>In the new study, researchers took one tissue sample from the brain, kidney and liver of 80 people autopsied in 2016 and 2024. They also sampled the brains of 12 people who died with Alzheimer\u2019s or dementia within that period.<\/p><p>The researchers found that brain and liver samples from 2024 had considerably higher MNP concentrations compared with those in 2016. Brain samples showed a 50% increase during the eight years.<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cPlastic production has been going up, plastic pollution has been going up. However, brain samples had 7-30 times more MNP than liver or kidney samples.<\/p><p>Campen said they expected the brain would be protected by the blood-brain barrier, a membrane that prevents harmful substances in the blood from passing into the brain. \u201cThat didn\u2019t seem to be the case,\u201d he said.<\/p><p>Campen hypothesized that plastics&nbsp;were likely \u201chijacking\u201d their way in with lipids, or fatty molecules that can cross the barrier.<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cIf you\u2019ve ever cleaned a Tupperware bowl that had butter in it, you know it\u2019s going to take a lot of hot water [to clean]. Plastics love fats; plasticizers are also very lipophilic so they like to move with fats too. So, we think part of why they stay in the brain is the brain has a higher lipid content than other organs,\u201d Campen said.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>Brains of people with dementia had up to 10 times more MNPs than other brains but that doesn\u2019t mean MNPs had caused dementia.
