This new\u00a0open access book<\/a>\u00a0develops a framework for advancing agroecology in transformations towards more just and sustainable food systems focusing on power, politics and governance. The authors analyse the conditions that enable and disable agroecology\u2019s potential and present six \u2018domains of transformation\u2019 where it comes into conflict with the dominant food system. They argue that food sovereignty, community-self organization and a shift to bottom-up governance are critical for the transformation to a socially just and ecologically viable food system.<\/p>\n

The last part of the book articulates a new way of thinking about the \u2018effects of governance\u00a0interventions\u2019 as various actors intentionally or inadvertently influence transitions to sustainability in territories with a focus on shifting toward a transformative agroecology.<\/p>\n

  1. Those that undermine agroecology by (i) suppressing and (ii) co-opting;<\/li>\n
  2. those that maintain the status quo by (iii) containing and (iv) shielding and<\/li>\n
  3. those that enable transformative agroecology by (v) supporting and nurturing and (vi) releasing and anchoring.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The analysis draws from political ecology and the multi-level perspective on sustainability transitions, ultimately making the case for food sovereignty, community-self organization and a shift to bottom-up governance as the basis for transformation towards a socially just and ecologically regenerative food system.<\/p>\n
